Every mill, workshop and store tells its own story in the Zaanse Schans. In the 17th century, more than 600 mills were installed in Zannse Schans, making it the first industrial area in the Netherlands. This Zaanse schans tour will take you back into the 18th century where mills are used to grind spices and produce paint, oil, and wooden boards. Many of these mills are still open for visitors today! Here you can see how the wind drives the different mills and learn all about the old crafts from the Zaan region. While in this unique neighborhood in the Netherlands, you are really able to soak in Dutch history.
Zaanse Schans is an inhabited open-air museum
The windmills, wooden houses with low doors and pinch windows, and the water of the Zaan watercourse create an unmatched nostalgia that you will experience here. The Zaanse Schans is located in the province of Noord-Holland in the municipality of Zaanstad. This famous tourist destination attracts a million visitors each year. It is intended to be a place of historical heritage but because it is accessible to anyone who wants to do a tour, it resembles something of an open-air museum. While you will get to experience Dutch history while visiting, this unique neighborhood and it’s houses continue to be inhabitated (by people are called Zaankanters), so it is much more than just a museum or tourist destination!
